|At one year I was walking, and by 16 months was falling a lot and wanted to crawl instead of walk. I would sleep for hours and then wake up screaming in pain; we didnít know what was wrong. My Ankle and knees began to swell, my knee was so swollen it looked like a baseball. We went to the doctor and they suggested it was superficial swelling. After a week with no change we switched doctors, to then be sent to the U OF M for a rheumatoid specialist. Our initial visit my Mom and Dad took me we spent hours at Amplatz children's hospital, trying to get answers. |
I left that day with a diagnosis that would change my life as I knew it. The initial medicine they prescribed was Naproxen a common medicine prescribed for this disease. It helped reduce some of the swelling and helped with the pain in addition to this prescription we were scheduled for injections; a week later they put me to sleep and injected my knees and ankles with steroids to reduce the swelling before it causes damage to my joints. Since then I have been on several different medicines trying to control my disease, I have eye checks every 6 months , lab draws every month and checkups with my Rheumatologist every 3 months. Every night before bed my Mommy and I pray that the doctors find a cure for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
